We saw the following reminder published in then NHSE bulletin. We suspect this has been added because practices are sending the prescription across to the pharmacy due to increased buy-in costs. We have asked to be connected with the team to try and understand the motivation and requirements of this request.
We believe that practices are still giving the injection in most cases. Let us know if you have heard anything more about this…
GP practices are reminded that the prescription and administration of contraceptive injections (eg. Depo Provera, Sayana Press and Noristerat) in general practice forms part of the core GP contract.
If a practice provides essential services, then they should be providing contraceptive injections as part of those services when required. Reimbursement is available through the personally administered drugs and appliances provisions in the SFE. The Clinical Negligence Scheme for General Practice (CNSGP) also covers this activity, see NHS Resolution FAQs.
